Rural road valuation in Gualeguaychú

An economic and territorial reading of the rural road network: how much productive value moves through these roads, what is lost when they become inaccessible and where intervention priorities emerge.

Rural accessibility is not only a physical condition of the territory: it is also an economic variable. This Productive Observatory exercise estimates the productive capacity associated with roads and districts in Gualeguaychú, incorporating economic activity, gross income, corn consumption and losses due to inaccessibility.

The database uses a relevant methodological assumption: it does not count primary activity such as corn, soybeans or wheat in order to avoid duplication when those inputs are later transformed into poultry, pork, cattle or another activity located on the same road. Losses due to inaccessibility are calculated over an annual average of 60 days.

What the map shows

The map organizes information into two layers: roads and districts. For each road, users can observe how much economic value each segment generates, the estimated loss due to inaccessibility, associated corn consumption and equivalent kilometers of asphalt or gravel that could be financed with the generated resources.

  • It moves the discussion on rural roads from a generic debate to a conversation with location, magnitude and priority.
  • It makes visible the economic cost of interrupted rural connectivity.
  • It serves as input for municipalities, road consortia, producers and institutions that need to plan works or manage financing.
